Classical tradition and mythology: survival of the myth of Cyibele in some Mediaeval and Renaissance Latin texts ; Tradición clásica y mitografía: pervivencia del mito de Cibeles en algunos textos latinos de la Edad Media del Renacimiento

Abstract

The figure of Cybele remains of interest for Medieval and Renaissance mythographers,although without the political implications it certainly had for the Augustanclassics. They evidently follow their predecessors, to whom they are clearly indebted,since they do not offer new approaches or insights into the topic that generate true innovation.The attachment to traditional texts explains their maintaining the same factsand symbolic interpretations. The transmission of the texts produces nonetheless somequaint changes in Boccaccio. Among the humanists under consideration, Gyraldi strivesto diversify the classic sources, although he is unable to fully abandon the Medieval tradition.The vulgariser Catari seems to open up new perspectives in his narrative. On theother hand, the scholar Pierio Valeriano only exploits the great classic authors andmanages to provide an appealing interpretation of Virgil's text. His use of ancient iconographicsources (coins, sculptures) as the basis for his interpretation is perhaps hismost significant contribution. ; La figura de Cibeles sigue interesando a los mitógrafos medievales y renacentistas,aunque sin las implicaciones políticas comprobadas en los clásicos augusteos. Noobstante, respecto a éstos es evidente la deuda y continuidad que representan. Pues no sedan enfoques o reflexiones sobre el tema que supongan verdadera innovación. El apegoa los textos tradicionales justifica su persistencia en los datos y en la interpretación simbólica.Si bien, la trasmisión textual da lugar en Boccaccio a cambios pintorescos. Gyraldi,entre los humanistas considerados, se esfuerza por ampliar las fuentes clásicas,aunque no consigue zafarse de la tradición medieval. El divulgador Cartari parece abrirnuevas perspectivas en su relato. A su vez el erudito Pierio Valeriano sólo explota a losgrandes autores clásicos, y consigue hacer del texto de Virgilio una llamativa interpretación.Quizá es de mayor significación su acogida de las fuentes iconográficas antiguas(monedas, esculturas) como base de sus interpretaciones.
