Portrait politique en musique

Abstract

In order to grasp one of the relations between music and politics, some situations of oppression are studied and a form of artistic reaction, the portrait, is scrutinized. Irony, as a way to make a discreet sign and to whisper something among bigger sounds is the main device studied, two types of which are distinguished. Firstly, an ironical conformism based on emphasis and functioning mechanically like a parrot, or relying on pomposity, like a bad comedian. Secondly, irony of a neutral kind, understood as mirror-like conformity. Examples are taken from the works of Haydn, Mozart and Shostakovich. ; Pour saisir l'un des rapports possibles entre musique et politique, l'article examine une situation (l'oppression) et l'une des réponses qu'elle suscite (le portrait). L'ironie, façon d'adresser un signe discret ou de chuchoter un sous-entendu, est ici l'instrument privilégié. On en distingue deux types : d'une part, le conformisme ironique de l'emphase (mécanique chez le perroquet, lourde chez le mauvais comédien) et, d'autre part, l'ironie conforme du reflet (sur le modèle du miroir). Les exemples sont pris dans les oeuvres de Haydn, Mozart et Chostakovitch.
