Roman embankment developments in the town of Vieux-Poitiers in Naintré (Vienne) ; Les aménagements de berge romains de l'agglomération de Vieux-Poitiers à Naintré (Vienne)

Abstract

International audience ; The ancient urban area of Vieux-Poitiers, in the town of Naintré (Vienne) is located on the right bank of the Clain river, 3 km from its confluence with the Vienne river, and approximately 25 km at the north-east of Poitiers/ Limonum , capital of the territory of the Pictones . Vieux-Poitiers is known for its remains of a theater and its urban planning (observation and interpretation of aerial photographs) but in 2012, during an underwater survey, remains identified as a possible port area were discovered on the right bank of the Clain river. In order to reinforce the embankment a retaining wall composed of aligned stakes was built at the beginning of the 1 st c. AD. It was later replaced by a caisson construction covered by a pavement. This construction seemed to last until the 2 nd c. AD, at the apogee of the urban settlement. The geographical and political context and the difficult navigation between Vieux-Poitiers and Limonum , make this site a perfect location as a transshipment area and for exchanges between the Loire basin and the territory of the Pictones . ; À 3 km de la confluence du Clain et de la Vienne, à environ 25 km au nord-est de la ville de Poitiers/ Limonum (Vienne), chef-lieu de la cité des Pictons, se situe l'agglomération antique de Vieux-Poitiers sur la commune de Naintré (Vienne). Si la trame de la ville antique et son théâtre sont connus depuis quelques décennies, c'est en 2012, lors d'une prospection subaquatique, que sont découverts les vestiges d'un aménagement de berge relevant du port de la ville, en rive droite du Clain. Un renforcement de la berge, composé d'un alignement de pieux, est mis en place au début du I er s. apr. J.-C., avant d'être remplacé à la fin du I er s. par une construction mixte formée de caissons en bois et d'un dallage en calcaire. Cet aménagement plus important semble perdurer pendant tout le II e s., apogée de l'agglomération, et plus tardivement encore.
