12 National audience pages This work has a twofold objective: firstly, to identify meeting and congress tourism, which is often ignored, and then to highlight its fundamental dynamics, through a multi-scaled study. As a first step, the evolution of space distribution, from global to national, and the forces behind this complex activity are analysed. Secondly, at the level of French metropolitan areas, urban strategies and policies for the tourism of meetings and congresses during the twin decade 1980-2000 were characterised and linked. ; International convention tourism is a part,of urban tourism. even if it is poorly known. The nature of this work is a multiscalar analysis of privileged urban localizations of tourism of meetings and conventions, from the international scale to the local one.
