Brief reflections on the conditions of end of life in cancer ; Brèves réflexions sur les conditions des fins de vie en cancérologie

Abstract

Oncology is primarily concerned with the question of the end of life: cancer is the cause of one out of three deaths in France. How oncology is addressing teh issue the time the report of Professor Sicard on end of life to the President, and notice No. 121 of the National Ethics Committee on the same subject are simultanously published? We provide an overview of the legal and "societal" aspects of the question of the end of life in oncology (I) in order to contextualize the presentation of the notice No. 22 of the Committee "Ethics and Cancer"—this notice to be seen as the contribution of French oncology to the debate (II). We conclude with some reflections on the political—rather than purely moral or ethical—public discussion that arose. ; La cancérologie est concernée au premier chef par la question de la fin de vie : le cancer est la cause d'un décès sur trois en France. Comment la cancérologie se situe-t-elle dans la réflexion sur la fin de vie que la publication quasi simultanée du rapport du Pr Sicard au président de la République sur la fin de vie, et de l'avis n° 121 du Comité national d'éthique sur le même sujet, a ramené à l'actualité ? On fait un tableau sommaire de la question (juridique et " sociétale ") de la fin de vie en cancérologie (I) pour contextualiser la présentation de l'avis n° 22 du Comité éthique et cancer qui peut être tenu pour la contribution de la cancérologie française au débat (II). On conclut sur quelques réflexions sur le caractère politique, plutôt que purement moral ou déontologique, de la discussion publique qui s'engage.
