WHAT HAPPENED, HABIBI? OR THE SEVEN SINS OF THE ARAB SPRING ; ¿QUÉ PASÓ HABIBI? O LOS SIETE PECADOS DE LAS REVUELTAS ÁRABES

Abstract

More than five years after the start of the Arab Spring, pessimism dominates the score cards. Although a historic process does not take shape in a few short years, the trend is a matter of concern. Taking into consideration visits to the region between 2011 and 2015, we evaluate the most relevant points on which the debate over the failure of the aforementioned revolts is centered. The paradox is in the limitations themselves on explaining a phenomenon that is still in progress coupled with the academic (and political) need to do it. These limitations imply a risk of error; however, we believe that moderately common elements, or at least elements significant in a variety of different contexts, do indeed exist and can provide a response to the question, "What happened, habibi?" ; Más de cinco años después del comienzo de las Revueltas Árabes, en los balances prima el pesimismo. Si bien, un proceso histórico no se define definitivamente en pocos años, la tendencia es preocupante. Teniendo en cuenta las visitas a la región entre 2011 y 2015, revisamos los puntos más relevantes sobre los cuales se centra el debate del fracaso de dichas revueltas. La paradoja está en las limitaciones propias de explicar un fenómeno todavía en curso y la necesidad académica (y política) de hacerlo. Estas limitaciones implican el riesgo de errar; sin embargo, creemos que sí existen elementos medianamente comunes, o por lo menos significativos en varios contextos diferentes, que permiten responder la pregunta: ¿Qué pasó habibi?
