Fadrique Furió Ceriol: el precursor del estado laico en España

Abstract

El objeto de este trabajo es analizar las ideas y los principios basilares de la teoría laica del Estado de Furió Ceriol, preceptista valenciano de mediados del siglo XVI. La línea discursiva de este artículo pretende resaltar las sustanciales diferencias que la separan respecto a la concepción escolástica del poder: el príncipe cristiano, hegemónica en la España moderna preilustrada. El tratadista valenciano preconiza un nuevo modelo político: la monarquía limitada. Su filosofía del Estado, que no tuvo gran predicamento porque implicaba una ruptura con el pensamiento teológico-político tradicional, enuncia –ya en esta época temprana– los principios liberales que han fundado el progreso y la modernidad en Occidente: la política es la ciencia del Estado, el fundamento racional del poder, la división de poderes y el pluralismo.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ideas and the basic principles of the secular State theory of Furio Ceriol, a Valencian theorist of the mid-sixteenth century. The line of reasoning of this article aims to highlight the substantial differences that separated it from the scholastic conception of power –the Christian prince–which was predominant in the modern pre-Enlightenment Spain. The Valencian scholar praises a new political model: the limited monarchy. His philosophy of the State, which was not well received as it implied a break with the traditional theological and political thought, enunciates –at such an early time– the liberal principles who founded progress and modernity in the West: politics is the science of the State, the rationale of power, the division of powers and the pluralism.
