The Construction of a Counterinsurgency Speech as a Legitimizing Discourse of the Paramilitary Power in Colombia ; La construcción del discurso contrainsurgente como legitimador del poder paramilitar en Colombia

Abstract

The paper analyses the legitimation process of ultra-right-wing paramilitaryviolence in Colombia. It focuses on the way in which the United Self-DefenseForces of Colombia intended to introduce themselves as the Colombian civil societyrepresentatives. The paper then points out that such a legitimization is rooted in theconstruction of security/order duality as the central axis around which two groups areidentified. On one hand, a particular group is framed as the only Colombian societyenemy, while on the other hand there is another group that appears as the liberatorwho face the former. This socio-political dynamic is analysed within two differentdiscursive registers. The first one is based on an analytical reading of the justificationsmade by the paramilitary leaders themselves and their political and economicsponsors. The second register is based on the analysis of local manifestations of thecounter-insurgency discourse in the city of Medellín, Colombia. It is stated that theidentification of an «other» as the social enemy has defined antidemocratic ways ofexercising power and violence, as well as antidemocratic ways of building societyand State. ; El artículo analiza el proceso de legitimación del paramilitarismo de ultraderecha en Colombia. Se centra en la forma como las Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) buscaron presentarse como delegados de la sociedad civil colombiana. Se sostiene que dicha legitimación hunde sus raíces en la construcción del binomio seguridad-orden como eje en el que se identifican dos grupos: uno que se enmarca como el enemigo de la sociedad colombiana, y otro que se enfrenta al primero, en tanto salvador. Esta dinámica sociopolítica es rastreada en dos registros discursivos: el primero, basado en una lectura analítica de la justificación realizada por los propios líderes y patrocinadores —económicos y políticos— de las AUC; y el segundo, basado en el análisis de manifestaciones concretas de la circulación del discurso contrainsurgente en la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia. Se expone que este proceso de identificación de un "otro" como enemigo social ha definido formas antidemocráticas de ejercicio del poder y de la violencia, así como de construcción de sociedad y de Estado.
