ARRABAL, PREJUICIO MORAL Y DEMANDA DE INSTRUCCIÓN: ELEMENTOS PARA COMPRENDER EL ESTATUS DE LOS CABALLEROS PARDOS EN LA TRANSICIÓN A LA SOCIEDAD REPUBLICANA*

Abstract

El proceso de incorporación política de los pardos y de los morenos,términos creados desde el siglo XVI para designar algunas de las castas queresultaron de la mezcla de los etíopes esclavos con españoles o indígenas,al igual que las palabras zambo y mulato, recibió con la reforma militarde 1773 un impulso integrador a la sociedad de privilegios que existióantes de la revolución que acaeció en la década de 1810. Este procesode integración social, que está en la base de la construcción de la nación colombiana, aun es un problema historiográfico sin resolver por carenciade fuentes y por las ideologías que campean entre los científicos sociales.Este artículo aventura una identificación de los obstáculos culturales quese interpusieron en el proyecto liberal de igualación política de todos losgrupos que fueron legados por el régimen anterior a la independencia.Palabras clavePardos, arrabal, instrucción pública, moral católica.ABSTRACTThe process of political incorporation of the Pardos and Morenos, termscreated in the XVIth century to denote some of the Castas resulting from themixture of the Ethiopian slaves with the Spanish or Indians —the same as thewords zambo and mulato— took with the military reform of 1773 and impulse of integration to the society of privileges existing before the revolution occurred in1810.
