Antiquity collecting in the Renaissance: the patronage relationship between Antoine de Granvelle and Stephanus Pighius ; El coleccionismo anticuario en el Renacimiento: la relación de mecenazgo entre Antonio de Granvela y Stephanus Pighius

International audience ; Cardinal de Granvelle was one of the most notorious figures within European diplomacy in the 16th century, especially during Philip II's reign. His political prominence could also be perceived on a cultural level, since his role of cultural agent to the Royal Family and other notable families allowed him to befriend artists and humanists from all over Europe. Later, he would use these connexions to increase his own artistic collection. Therefore, it is not uncommon to encounter numerous mentions of art commissions or exchanges, as well as some antiquities, throughout his large correspondence. To illustrate Granvelle's role as a collector, we will analyse his relationship with Stephanus Pighius, who was in charge of the cardinal's personal library in Brussels from 1558 to the early seventies. Besides this responsibility, he dedicated himself to increasing his patron's antiquities collection, by purchasing them for Perrenot or even gifting them to him. In order to do that, we will be particularly focusing on the case of an ancient silver vase, discovered in Arras, which inspired Pighius to publish two works: Mythologia (1559) and Themis Dea (1568). ; El cardenal Antonio Perrenot de Granvela fue una de las figuras más notables del mundo diplomático europeo del siglo XVI, especialmente durante el reinado de Felipe II. Esta relevancia política también se ve reflejada en el plano cultural. En virtud de su mediación entre creador y ordenante, generalmente miembros de la familia real u otras altas personalidades, Granvela pudo establecer una estrecha relación con artistas y humanistas europeos, contactos que utilizaría posteriormente para atender a sus deseos de coleccionista. Así, no es raro encontrar menciones a encargos o intercambios de obras de arte, así como de antigüedades en su vasta correspondencia. En esta ocasión, para ilustrar su papel de coleccionista, se ha querido analizar la relación del cardinal con Stephanus Pighius, quien se encargó de su biblioteca personal en su residencia de Bruselas desde 1558 hasta inicio de los años 70. Además de este cargo, también se dedicó a aumentar la colección de antigüedades de Perrenot, ya fuera mediante encargos u obsequios. Se prestará particular atención al caso de una copa antigua de plata descubierta en Arras, que inspirará dos obras del humanista: Mythologia (1559) y Themis Dea (1568).
