Abstract

After the war in Darfur, military weapons have proliferated and are used in various forms of violence. The government of Sudan is asking traditional leaders to get their followers to submit the weapons they hold for marking and registration. The report looks at this project in West Darfur and comes to the conclusion that the approach is promising, but not yet successful. It has the potential to contribute to the building of confidence and peace, through weapons control. It could be similarly employed in other post-conflict areas. But to be successful it requires a strong, broad, visible and more consistent effort on the part of the government.
