El teatro musical de Lin-Manuel Miranda en contexto: minorías, política y perfomatividad

Abstract

[spa] Partiendo de las perspectivas planteadas por el Nuevo Historicismo y del Materialismo Cultural, el presente trabajo de investigación aborda la intrínseca relación entre toda obra artística, en nuestro caso el teatro musical estadounidense, y las circunstancias sociales, culturales y especialmente políticas en las que esa obra fue concebida. Del mismo modo que los minstrel shows de finales del siglo XVIII están íntimamente relacionados con los vestigios de la esclavitud y el racismo sistematizado del momento todavía presentes en el siglo XXI, este estudio contextualizará la representación de las minorías étnicas y personas racializadas en las producciones de teatro musical del puertorriqueño LinManuel Miranda. Galardonado con tres premios Tony, tres Grammys, un Emmy, y un premio Pulitzer, los musicales de Miranda han dejado su singular huella en el Broadway contemporáneo. Este análisis se centrará en las producciones In the Heights (2005), 21 Chump Street: The Musical (2014), y Hamilton: An America Musical (2016), y demostrará el modo en que cada una de ellas está indisolublemente vinculada a la situación sociopolítica del momento en los Estados Unidos bajo las administraciones de George W. Bush, Barak Obama y Donald Trump, respectivamente. ; [eng] Starting from the perspectives of New Historicism and Cultural Materialism, this research project addresses the intrinsic relationship between any artistic work, in our case the American musical theatre, and the social, cultural, and especially political circumstances in which that work was conceived. Just as the minstrel shows of the late 18th century are intimately related to the vestiges of slavery and the systematised racism of the time still present in the 21st century, this study will contextualise the representation of ethnic minorities and racialised people in the musical theatre productions of the Puerto Rican Lin-Manuel Miranda. The recipient of three Tony Awards, three Grammys, an Emmy, and a Pulitzer Prize, Miranda's musicals have left their unique mark on contemporary Broadway. This analysis will focus on the productions In the Heights (2005), 21 Chump Street: The Musical (2014), and Hamilton: An America Musical (2016), and will prove how each of them is inextricably linked to the socio-political moment in the United States under the administrations of George W. Bush, Barak Obama, and Donald Trump, respectively.
