Immigrant associations and ethnic identity among Japanese immigrants and their descendants in Argentina ; Asociaciones voluntarias e identidad étnica de inmigrantes japoneses y sus descendientes en Argentina

Abstract

Japanese migration to Argentina started in the early Twentieth Century, with the arrival of Japanese men from other Latin American countries and did not stop until the 60's even though as time passed the composition of the immigrant group changed and so did their objectives. Japanese immigrants soon created voluntary associations where they gathered, a trend that still survives to these days. The different kind of associations they created, their aims and later development as well as their relationship to the Japanese government, are broached in this paper. It focuses on the changes Japanese associations have suffered along the process, a) as support devices for young men that arrived as dekaseguis in early times, and whose stay was extended indefinitely, b) during the Second World War crisis c) with the arrival of Japanese newcomers during the postwar period, d) attending to the cases of Japanese migrants arriving from the Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Bolivia; and, finally, dealing with the dilemma aroused by the decision to settle definitively versus the desire to preserve Japanese traditions and identity ; La inmigración japonesa en Argentina se inició a comienzos del siglo XX, con la llegada de hombres de origen japonés, provenientes de otros países de América Latina y hasta fines de la década del sesenta no cesó, aunque con el transcurso del tiempo cambió su composición y sus objetivos. Los inmigrantes japoneses tempranamente crearon asociaciones que los nucleaban, tendencia que se mantuvo en el tiempo hasta la actualidad. Los tipos de asociaciones que se fueron conformando, sus objetivos, y su desarrollo posterior, así como su relación con el gobierno japonés, son objeto de análisis en este artículo. En especial, se presenta la transformación que ha venido sufriendo el rol de estas asociaciones en la colectividad, en los inicios como soporte para los jóvenes que llegaban como inmigrantes temporales y cuya estadía se terminaba prolongando indefinidamente; la crisis de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la llegada de migración de posguerra, los casos de inmigración por deslizamiento desde la República Dominicana, Paraguay y Bolivia, el dilema que surge de la decisión de radicarse definitivamente frente al deseo de preservación de costumbres y una identidad japonesa
