El autor de estas líneas y de otras tantas sobre arte y literatura, al que usualmente solo se identifica con el teatro, era también buen poeta, buen narrador y buen teórico de estética y política. Había nacido el 10 de febrero de 1898 en Augsburg, Baviera (Al.), en el seno de una familia catalogada como burguesa. Estudió en el liceo de su ciudad natal, donde a temprana edad empezó a escribir pomas de "refinada sencillez", según algunos críticos.
