Natalio Berman and jewish immigration to Chile during the Second World War ; Natalio Berman y la inmigración judía a Chile durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Abstract

During the Second World War and throughout the years prior to it, the immigration policies in Chile were very restrictive. An exception was the first part of the government of President Aguirre Cerda, who opened the country's doors to the oppressed and persecuted. Soon thereafter, yielding to pressure from the press and opposition groups, he also restricted immigration. Together with Aguirre Cerda, 3 Jewish deputies came into office. One of them, Dr. Natalio Berman took an active role in the immigration policies and in the authorization of ships with Jewish refugees allowed to enter the country even after the immigration restrictions took place and after the closing of the border. This article presents a review of the historic and political context that existed in Chile during the Second World War and the role played by Dr. Natalio Berman, renowned physician, writer, community and political leader. ; La política inmigratoria a Chile durante la época previa y durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue bastante restrictiva, con excepción de la primera etapa del gobierno de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, quien abrió las puertas a todos los oprimidos y perseguidos, pero luego optó por restringir la inmigración debido a presiones de la prensa y de grupos opositores. Junto al Presidente Aguirre Cerda obtuvieron bancada tres diputados de origen judío, uno de ellos, Natalio Berman, tuvo un activo rol en la política inmigratoria y en la autorización de la llegada de barcos con refugiados judíos al país, aún después del cierre de las fronteras. En el presente artículo se revisa el marco histórico- político que reinaba en Chile el periodo de la segunda guerra mundial y se subraya la labor de Natalio Berman, destacado médico, escritor, líder comunitario y dirigente político.
