Stadt, Land, AfD : zur Produktion des Urbanen und des Ruralen im Prozess der Urbanisierung ; The city, the countryside and the AfD : on the production of the urban and the rural within the process of urbanisation

Abstract

Im Beitrag entwickeln wir einen kritischen Blick auf die Geographie der Wahlergebnisse der Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) bei den Bundestagswahlen 2017. Wir hinterfragen Erklärungsmuster, die in einem starren Stadt-Land-Gegensatz verhaftet bleiben und die komplexe Prozesshaftigkeit der Urbanisierung ignorieren. Dagegen gehen wir mit Henri Lefebvre und Theodor W. Adorno vom Urbanen und Ruralen als sozialen Verhältnissen aus, die sich im übergeordneten Prozess der Urbanisierung in dialektischer Weise scheiden sowie räumlich im Spannungsverhältnis von Zentrum und Peripherie materialisieren. Beispielhaft illustrieren wir diesen Prozess in der Diskussion von drei unterschiedlichen Orten, an denen die AfD bei den Bundestagswahlen besonders erfolgreich war: dem Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald als Fall einer umfassenden Peripherisierung, dem Quartier Pforzheim-Haidach als peripheres Zentrum und dem Stadtteil Mannheim-Schönau als zentrale Peripherie. Der Beitrag versucht damit eine räumliche Perspektive auf aktuelle Erfolge des Rechtspopulismus zu entwickeln wie auch Stadt-Land-Verhältnisse konzeptionell neu zu erfassen. ; In this paper, we discuss the geography of the electoral success of the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the national elections to the German parliament in September 2017. We oppose the view that the urban-rural divide is a sufficient explanation for the geographic electoral patterns. By critiquing the simplistic reduction to differences between "the city" and "the countryside," the paper proposes a critical theorization of the urban and the rural as social relationships. The emergence of urban-rural divides needs to be dialectically conceptionalized within the process of urbanization, which materializes in space within the field of tension between the center and the periphery. This theorization, drawing on the works of Henri Lefebvre and Theodor W. Adorno, is exemplified in a discussion of three different locations where the AfD was especially successful: the rural administrative district of West Pomerania-Greifswald, and the urban neighborhoods Mannheim-Schönau and Pforzheim-Haidach. We aim to develop with the paper a spatial perspective on the current rise of rightwing populism as well as a critical understanding of urban-rural divides.
