Las matronas y la transmisión de saberes científicos sobre el parto en la España del S. XIX ; Midwives and the Transmission of Scientific Knowledge on Births in 19th Century Spain

Abstract

Las matronas tuvieron un papel como transmisoras de saberes técnicos sobre el parto que ha sido ignorado por la historiografía obstétrica y profesional. A través de fuentes de archivo, legislativas, prensa profesional y libros sobre partos (entre ellos el primero de autoría femenina publicado en España), se estudian los cambios en la formación académica de las matronas a lo largo del siglo XIX y las iniciativas docentes que varias de ellas protagonizaron a partir de 1870. Se recuperan voces de matronas que escribieron para formar a otras y se analizan sus ideas sobre la mujer, la profesión y la ciencia obstétrica, así como las alianzas que establecieron con profesionales médicos para poder llevar a cabo sus objetivos. ; Midwives played a role as transmitters of technical knowledge on births that has been ignored by obstetrical and professional historiography. Using archives, legislative sources, the professional press and books on childbirth (among them the first written by a woman in Spain) the changes in the academic training of midwives throughout the 19th century are studied, along with the teaching initiatives of various of them from 1870 onwards. The testimonies of midwives who wrote in order to train others are recovered and their ideas on the woman, the profession and obstetrical science are analysed, together with the alliances they established with medical professionals in order to carry out their objectives.
