La fundación de la Universidad de Los Andes: entre la tradición oficializada y la verdad histórica ; The founding of the University of Los Andes: from official tradition to historic truth

Abstract

Desde hace tiempo se viene discutiendo la fecha de la fundación de la Universidad de Los Andes, sin que la Institución haya tomado una posición defi nitiva al respecto. A pesar de que en diversos y documentados estudios hemos demostrado que fue creada el 21 de septiembre de 1810 por la Junta Superior Gubernativa de Mérida y no el 29 de marzo de 1785 por Fray Juan Ramos de Lora, las autoridades universitarias continúan manteniendo una tradición ofi cializada desde 1950 sin fundamento histórico alguno, ignorando que ya en 1910 se había conmemorado su centenario y en 1960 su sesquicentenario, y obviando además que en 1985 se acordó la celebración del bicentenario de la casa de educación establecida en 1785 por el primer Obispo de la diócesis de Mérida. El propósito del presente trabajo es seguir demostrando que la verdadera fecha fundacional de nuestra Alma Mater se ubica en los albores de la formación de la república y no en la época de la dominación colonial. ; For a long time the founding date of the University of Los Andes has been argued without the Institution taking a stand on the matt er. Even though we have proved in diverse and documented studies that it was founded on September 21st, 1810 by the Superior Government Board of Mérida and not on March 29th, 1785 by Fray Juan Ramos de Lora, university authorities continue to maintain an offi cial tradition since 1950 with no historic base whatsoever, ignoring that already in 1910 its centenary had been commemorated and in 1960 its sesquicentennial; even obviating that in 1985 it was agreed to celebrate the bicentennial of the academic center established in 1785 by the fi rst Bishop of the Mérida Diocese. The purpose of this paper is to continue demonstrating that the true founding date of our Alma Mater is located in the beginnings of the formation of the republic and not in the times of colonial domination. ; 159-198 ; ali_lopez_ve@yahoo.com
