Christianity, public reason and "cultural warfare" ; Cristianismo, razón pública y "guerra cultural"

Abstract

Western civilization is currently characterized by a deep cultural divide. This divide positions, on confronting sides, the "conservatives" who still maintain a cultural and moral Judeo-Christian heritage and the "progressives" who regard such a heritage as obsolete and instead uphold the relativistic, hedonistic, liberationist worldview of the postmodern Left. The major battlefields where this "war" is waged are: bioethics (abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering); sexual ethics and the family model (gender ideology, gay marriage, etc.); and the role of religion in public life. The Left failed to fulfill its classical agenda (socialism) in the 20th century. It has now replaced its socio-economic revolution by a sexual, moral and cultural one. But the political Right has not yet grasped this shift: right-wing parties are often reluctant to develop distinctive positions on those issues, clearly distinguish ; La civilización occidental está atravesada en la actualidad por una profunda escisión que opone a los "conservadores" que aún se reclaman de la tradición moral y cultural judeo-cristiana (con independencia de que compartan o no la fe religiosa) con los "progresistas" que la consideran obsoleta y buscan sustituirla por la Weltanschauung relativista y hedonista característica de la izquierda postmoderna. Los terrenos donde se libra esta "guerra" son: la bioética (aborto, eutanasia, ingeniería genética, etc.); la moral sexual y el modelo de familia (matrimonio gay, ideología de género, etc.); el papel de la religión en la vida pública. La izquierda fracasó en su proyecto clásico (el socialismo) durante el siglo XX, y ha sustituido la revolución socio-económica por la revolución sexual, moral y cultural. Pero la derecha política no ha tomado aún plena conciencia de esto, y rechaza adoptar posiciones nítidas en dichos temas.
