La diaspora noire au Canada : sociohistoire d'une minorité racialisée et dynamiques contestataires

International audience ; While Canada has not experienced major racial unrest as in Chicago and Notting Hill, the cities of Montreal, Toronto and Halifax witnessed several anti-racist struggles in the 1960s. Since the implementation of policies promoting diversity, Canada recognizes, albeit timidly, that the history of immigrants, their stories and contributions are part of the history of Canada. However, the history of African Canadians is still not sufficiently well known among the general public – their historical experience is often buried in the official history of Canada or reduced to a few emblematic figures. This article, which is an abridged version of research conducted between 2013 and 2015, proposes (without claiming to be exhaustive) an overview of the formation of the Black diaspora in Canada and some of the major stages in their struggle against systemic racism and in favor of social justice. The field of education appears to be a real laboratory for understanding these emancipatory dynamics as well as some of the issues raised in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. ; Si le Canada n'a pas connu d'agitations raciales importantes comme celles des villes de Chicago et Notting Hill, les villes de Montréal, Toronto et Halifax ont été le théâtre, au cours des années 1960, de plusieurs luttes antiracistes. Depuis l'adoption des politiques de promotion de la diversité, le Canada reconnaît, quoique timidement, que l'histoire des immigrants, leurs récits et leur contribution font partie de l'histoire du Canada. Néanmoins, l'histoire des Afro-Canadiens demeure encore mal connue du grand public – leur expérience historique étant souvent noyée dans l'histoire officielle du Canada ou réduite à quelques figures emblématiques.
