Abstract

International audience ; Can one be both a rich young man, appointed sub-prefect of Dinan at the age of 22 thanks to his father's relations and a "man of the people" worshipped by a workers' population? The case of Eugène Janvier, in 1847-1848, seems to prove it since a petition collecting the signature of 10% of the inhabitants of this city claimed and obtained the confirmation in his function of this July monarchy's official under the Second Republic. This article seeks to understand the reasons for this paradoxical popularity, between ideology, clientelism and real proximity. ; Peut-on être à la fois un jeune homme riche, nommé sous-préfet de Dinan à 22 ans grâce aux relations de son père et un « homme du peuple » adoré par une population d'ouvriers ? Le cas d'Eugène Janvier, en 1847-1848, semble le prouver puisqu'une pétition rassemblant la signature de 10 % des habitants de cette ville réclame et obtient le maintien de ce fonctionnaire de la monarchie de Juillet sous la seconde République. Cet article cherche à comprendre les raisons de cette popularité paradoxale, entre idéologie, clientélisme et réelle proximité.
