Latin American Armies 1945-1998: Main Events and Conceptual Approaches

Abstract

El objetivo de este documento es presentar un resumen de los principales hechos e interpretaciones teóricas de los Ejércitos Latinoamericanos (LAA) que se han desarrollado desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Los objetivos particulares son: (a) Definir los principales períodos históricos de la ALA en su desarrollo institucional después de 1945; (b) Identificar las principales condiciones sociales y políticas de esos períodos y el efecto sobre LAA; (c) Discutir los principales enfoques teóricos utilizados para explicar el papel de LAA, sus principales autores y cómo estos conceptos cambiaron con el tiempo. Estas perspectivas teóricas se referirán a la estructura de los ejércitos, funciones, repercusiones sociales de las actividades de los ejércitos y sus posiciones políticas.Este documento hace referencia a la región latinoamericana en su conjunto, aunque muchas de las referencias bibliográficas incluyen autores que basan sus conceptos en países específicos. Las conclusiones resumirán los argumentos comunes y las perspectivas conceptuales presentadas, así como sus aplicaciones a las condiciones actuales de la región latinoamericana. ; The objective of this document is to present a summary of the main facts and theoretical interpretations of the Latin American Armies (LAA) that have developed since World War II. The particular objectives are: (a) To define the main historical periods of the ALA in its institutional development after 1945; (b) Identify the main social and political conditions of those periods and the effect on LAA; (c) Discuss the main theoretical approaches used to explain the role of LAA, its main authors, and how these concepts changed over time. These theoretical perspectives will refer to the structure of the armies, functions, social repercussions of the activities of the armies and their political positions.This document refers to the Latin American region as a whole, although many of the bibliographic references include authors who base their concepts in specific countries. The conclusions will summarize the common arguments and conceptual perspectives presented, as well as their applications to current conditions in the Latin American region.
