The Black Theatre Movement in the United Sttates and in South Africa

Abstract

[ES]El florecimiento de los movimientos sociopolíticos entre los años 60 y 90 en los Estados Unidos y en Sudáfrica estableció los firmes cimientos sobre los que, con una fuerza e ímpetu sin precedentes, se forjó el teatro negro de estos años. Forma y contenido surgieron a la par del compromiso político y artístico adoptado por estos artistas contra el imperialismo, colonialismo y racismo occidentales. Por primera vez en la historia, el teatro negro de los Estados Unidos y de Sudáfrica analizaba y valoraba las raíces negras norteamericanas y africanas de estos pueblos fusionándolas con el momento histórico presente para que pasado y presente pudieran iluminar la búsqueda de un futuro de libertad. [EN]The socio-political movements of the 1960s through the 1980s in the United States and in South Africa established a strong foundation upon which Black theatre arose and developed with a marked and unprecedented intensity. Form and content rose out of the artist's political and artistic stand against Western imperialism, colonialism and racism. For the first time in history, Black theatre in the United States and in South Africa examined and assessed the Black historical past of African Americans and South Africans fused with the historical moment of their present so that it could enlighten a future of freedom for their respective communities. In both countries, the Black Theatre Movement shared specific elements and goals that this study comprises under the title of Aesthetics of Self-Affirmation. Nevertheless, the distinctive components of each country's conditions and socio-political milieus have equally generated the specific features that have shaped African American and Black South African theatre (including gender variations) in different and unique ways.
