Urban Cleanliness and Health in Castile in the Transit from the Middle Ages to the Modern Ages ; Limpieza y salubridad urbana en Castilla en el tránsito de la Edad Media a la Moderna

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Filth of medieval cities was a serious problem that local governments tried to solve through tight regulations. The ordinances that dealt with these fundamental aspects were collected in a section known as sanitation policies. The late medieval centuries were a continuous battle on the part of the urban council against the inhabitants of the towns who, with their non-civic behavior, transformed the cities into authentic garbage dumps. Dirty water, illegal dunghills, streets full of garbage, loose animals or urban fires broke the street decoration and made it difficult to run daily life. The degree of environmental sensitivity manifested by the late medieval urban community was zero, but thanks to the initiatives of the municipal regimes, progress was made in terms of well-being and health. ; RESUMEN: La inmundicia de las ciudades medievales supuso un grave problema que los gobiernos locales intentaron resolver por medio de normativas ajustadas al respecto. Las ordenanzas que trataban de estos aspectos fundamentales se recogían en un apartado que se conoce como policía urbana. Los siglos bajomedievales fueron una continua batalla por parte del sistema concejil contra los habitantes de las poblaciones que, con sus comportamientos incívicos, transformaban las ciudades en auténticos basureros. Aguas sucias, estercoleros ilegales, calles atestadas de basuras, animales sueltos o fuegos urbanos rompían el ornato callejero y dificultaban el discurrir de la vida cotidiana. El grado de sensibilidad medioambiental manifestado por el colectivo urbano bajomedieval era nulo, pero gracias a las iniciativas de los regímenes municipales se avanzó en las cotas de bienestar y salubridad.
