НОВІ ВІДОМОСТІ ПРО МИСТЕЦЬКУ КОЛЕКЦІЮ О. І. ТА В. С. БРОДСЬКИХ

Abstract

Almost each museum collection is based on private collections which found their way into museums under various historical and political circumsances. However, very little information about their former owners, if at all, is provided either on display cards or in museum catalogs. Such disregard for art collectors does not motivate modern collectors to cooperate with state-owned museums. Even though collectors understand the need to preserve and promote their collections they do not want their collection items to end up in museum repositories or their names to be erased from history together with inventory books. The task of museum staff and art critics is to retrieve collectors' names and to promote collectors as guardians of cultural legacy of certain ages. The purposeof this study is to highlight the forgotten and unknown biographical information about the family of scholars and collectors – Oleksandr Illyich Brodsky and Vera Saveliivna Brodska, whose art collection, after their death, partly resurfaced in the National Museum "Kyiv Art Gallery", as well as for the fi rst time to publish biographical data and information about V. S. Brodska, who was an ardent porcelain collector, and to describe her collection in the museum. In addition, the study sets out to provide a general overview of the family's art collection, as well as to break down porcelain items by factories which manufactured them for further study. The research methodologywas to systematically analyze known archival sources. Individual works of art and literature from the Brodskys' collection were classifi ed and counted up. The principle of simulation was used to get an idea of how the collection might have looked before. At the fi nal stage, empirical research methods such as interviews, surveys, etc. were used. In the course of the research,discussions were held with the employees of the L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chem-istry.
