Yoakhim Yerlich «Latopisic albo kroniczka .» as record to the history of Ukraine in the XVIII century

Abstract

The article deals with the work of an Orthodox gentry from the Ukrainian lands, which were part of the Commonwealth, Joachim Yerlych «Latopisec albo kroniczka róznych spraw i dziejów dawnych i terazniejszych czasów .», that describes the events of 1620 - 1673, from the times of the Khotyn War to the Michail Korybut Vishnevetsky reign, which took place mostly on the lands of Volyn, Kyiv region and other regions of the Commonwealth. The paper uses the methods of historiographical analysis and synthesis, historical-review, comparative-historical, biographical methods by which Y. Yerlych's points of views concerning important events of Ukrainian life of the seventeenth century are analyzed. It was stated that researchers, both Polish and Ukrainian, from the middle of the nineteenth century paid particular attention to the person of J. Yerlych, his genealogy. However, the aforementioned work was not yet the subject of a special historigraphical analysis. It is proved that J. Yerlich «Latopisec albo kroniczka .» is an important work of Ukrainian historiography. It remains an important record for studying, first of all, the social atmosphere of the time, reflects the thoughts of conscious, educated, patriotically minded to the Commonwealth, inhabitant of the Kyiv and Volyn region concerning the social, political, military events of the Commonwealth during 1620 - 1673 years. «Latopisec albo kroniczka .» described the evolution of his views about the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks, the B. Khmelnitsky liberation war of the Ukrainian people and the military conflicts of the following times, the period of the «Ruins». Number of official Cossack agreements with the authorities of the Commonwealth has been published. The content of the work contains a lot of current information about the gentleness of Ukrainian lands, shows the social atmosphere of the local population, presents the characteristics of the famous persons of the Commonwealth, including the kings.
