Russian SMEs during the period of economic crisis: analysis of current conditions

Abstract

The crisis, which has been taking place in Russian economy since recent years, demonstrates the vulnerability of the existing economic model that is driven by large resource extraction companies. Relatively low share of SME segment in GDP comparing it to the most of the developed countries is a resource for reinforcement of economic growth. This fact reflects on upcoming governmental structural reforms, directed to steady growth of small and medium business in GDP. In this regard, it is crucial to understand the current state of SME segment in the conditions of a prolonged recession. This study aims to describe the main characteristics of the Russian economy and identify the characteristics and trends of small and medium-sized businesses. This study follows a two-step method. On the first step, statistical data from national and global databases was analyzed in order to describe the economic situation in Russia. On the second step the analytical reports considering the Russian SME segment were analyzed. The results of the study identify negative reaction to crisis.
