Abstract

AbstractThe unsustainable management of forests worldwide has been presented as a problem of global proportions by environmentalists since the 1970s. In the past decade the role of forests has also become a major development issue. However the international forest problem is represented differently by different interests. This paper examines aspects of the forest problem and the arguments for and against global action for forest governance. The different policy mechanisms applied and recommended are discussed, and the prospects for successful negotiation and implementation of a global agreement on forests are reviewed.
