Running Out of Time: An Analysis of Shutting Down New York Newsday by Times Mirror

Abstract

The launch of New York Newsday in 1983 was doomed to failure, regardless of the newspaper's promise and its natural expansion from Newsday's Long Island base into New York City. Theplan for profitability advocated by senior management was approved by its parent, Times Mirror, which welcomed a presence in the highly visible New York market, already dominated by three other daily newspapers. However, the effects of media conglomeration on Times Mirror for bottom line results would pull the plug on the New York venture that was nearing its provisional term and beginning to show positive results.
