Abstract

Resumo:Neste breve texto, apresentam-se as ideias centrais que percorrem todo o exame realizado no livro The Middle Ground Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650–1815. A saber, os elementos básicos que constituem a análise desenvolvida no referido livro são: acomodação de diferenças simbólicas, rejeição da conceito convencional de aculturação, processos de mal-entendidos criativos que geram novas convenções socioculturais, dependência mútua, frágil equilíbrio de forças entre os grupos sociais em interação, condição de fronteira (geográfica e cultural), foco nas ações dos povos indígenas e suas lógicas específicas, perspectiva relacional do contato colonial entre sociedades nativas e euro-americanas, abordagem do imperialismo colonial europeu e negação de essencialismos. Tais diretrizes analíticas são empregadas para analisar a natureza das relações entre impérios e sociedades pré-estatais e as possibilidades de compreensão e acomodação intercultural.Abstract:In this brief text, we present the central ideas that run through the entire examination carried out in the book The Middle Ground Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650–1815. Namely, the basic elements that constitute the analysis developed in that book are: accommodation of symbolic differences, rejection of the conventional concept of acculturation, processes of creative misunderstandings that generate new sociocultural conventions, mutual dependence, fragile balance of forces between groups social interaction, border condition (geographical and cultural), focus on the actions of indigenous peoples and their specific logic, relational perspective of colonial contact between native and Euro-American societies, approach to European colonial imperialism and denial of essentialisms. Such analytical guidelines are used to analyze the nature of the relationship between empires and pre-state societies and the possibilities for intercultural understanding and accommodation.
