Abstract
Motion‐picture films continue to be one of the least discussed aspects of archaeological teaching and research. This essay provides an introductory overview of the more than 170 archaeological films presently distributed in the United States. The history, advantages, and potentials of films in archaeology are also discussed. Reviews of all the films mentioned in this essay are to be found in the accompanying review sections or in recent issues of this journal.
