Abstract

In a world of increasing specialization, everyone is a non-expert in many fields crucial for public understanding and decision-making. The author—an expert on scholarly communication in the current era of rapid technological and institutional change in higher education—argues that the most important change needed in communications between specialized fields of expertise and the rest of society is not technological. It is the willingness to accept the responsibility to translate expertise and engage in crucial public conversations.
