Abstract

The author, pointing to the assumptions of participatory democracy, emphasises the importance of grassroots social initiatives in the formation of a democratic society. They are a symptom of the democratic culture of society. These conditions are fulfilled by the concept of a cooperative republic, formulated by the Polish philosopher Edward Abramowski, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As a project of socio-political progress, the principles of the cooperative republic are still relevant.
