O Clube Tabajara e as narrativas de racismo em Encruzilhada do Sul: entre tensão e identidade étnica

Abstract

Este artigo tem por objetivo discutir algumas questões surgidas ao longo de uma pesquisa etnográfica realizada junto a moradores negros do município de Encruzilhada do Sul/RS, que freqüentavam os antigos carnavais do Clube Tabajara. Tal agremiação apresenta como singularidade o fato de ser um espaço constituído por e para a população negra do município, uma vez que na época de sua fundação, em 1949, os negros eram constrangidos a não freqüentar os outros clubes existentes na cidade, bem como participar dos blocos carnavalescos destes. Pensamos aqui o Clube Tabajara enquanto um espaço de sociabilidade da comunidade negra encruzilhadense, bem como um espaço de trabalho da memória deste grupo, cujas narrativas revelam redes, vivências, trajetórias e estratégias familiares para contornar as diversas formas de preconceito racial a que estes grupos eram – e ainda são – submetidos. The Tabajara Club and the narratives of racism in Encruzilhada do Sul, Brazil: between tension and ethnic identity Abstract This paper aims to discuss some of the issues raised during an ethnographic research conducted with black inhabitants of the municipality of Encruzilhada do Sul, RS, Brazil, which attended the old carnival parties at the Tabajara Club. This association is characterized by the singularity of being a space constituted by and for the black population of the municipality, since by the time of its inauguration, in 1949, black people were constrained not to attend other clubs in the city nor participate in their carnival blocos. We think the Tabajara Club as a space for sociability of the black population of Encruzilhada do Sul, as well as a working space for the memory of this group, whose narratives unveil networks, experiences, histories and family strategies for escaping the various forms of racial prejudice they were – and still are – submitted to.
