Abstract

En la era de la globalización la producción manufacturera ha evidenciado transformaciones en el qué se produce (cambio estructural), en el cómo se produce (cambio en el proceso de producción) y en el para quién se produce (cambio en el destino de las mercancías). Tales transformaciones han repercutido en una readecuación en los patrones y determinantes de la localización industrial (reestructuración territorial). En este documento se analizan la evolución de la estructura económica y la producción manufacturera de México en el periodo 1980-2003, y las transformaciones en el patrón de distribución territorial en las principales ciudades del país. El universo de estudio comprende 81 ciudades con una población de 100 mil y más habitantes. Entre los hallazgos del estudio sobresale el que la reestructuración económica e industrial en México se ha caracterizado más por una ampliación cuantitativa de la base económica y menos por un cambio estructural cualitativo, salvo en el destino de la producción manufacturera, en donde se advierte una mayor inclinación hacia la exportación. Asimismo la reestructuración territorial ha estado determinada por el nuevo patrón locacional de la industria automotriz, la escasa dispersión espacial de las empresas maquiladoras, y la desindustrialización que han presentado algunas ciudades, particularmente la Ciudad de México. AbstractDuring the era of globalization, manufacturing production has undergone transformations as regards what is produced (structural change), how this is produced (change in the production process) and whom one produces for (change in the destination of merchandise). These transformations have led to a modification of the patterns and determinants of industrial location (territorial restructuring). This document analyzes the evolution of the economic structure and manufacturing production of Mexico during the period from 1980 to 2003 and the transformations in the pattern of territorial distribution of the country's main cities. The universe of study comprises 81 cities with a population of 100,000 or more. One of the findings of the study is that Mexico's economic and industrial restructuring has been characterized more by a quantitative expansion of the economic base and less by a qualitative change, except in the destination of manufacturing production, where a greater emphasis on exports has been observed. Likewise, territorial restructuring has been determined by the new locational pattern of the automobile industry, the reduced spatial distribution of maquiladoras and the deindustrialization observed in certain cities, particularly Mexico City.
