Soviet anthropological studies in the traditional societies of the aboriginal ethnoses of northwestern Siberia (ie. Nentsi, Khanty, Mansi, Selkup, Nganassans, Entsi, etc.), in their ethnic origins, social structure and economic and cultural specificity, have always made a complex use of the materials of such different sciences as ethnography, archaeology, physical anthropology and lingogeography. Studies have been carried out along three main lines: ethnogenesis and ethnic history, social structure and social history, historical ethnography (formation of economic-cultural types and culture genesis).
Studies in the social institutions of the northwestern peoples proceeded mainly to solve three major problems: clan and dual organization, large patriarchal family, neighbor-territorial community.
