Abstract

The territories of jazz : a cultural area, a social space. A musical phenomenon whose audience has become worldwide, jazz cannot be apprehended without reference to the American social space. For Joël Pailhé, the distribution of the black population over the territory, the alliance of music and the big city, the modest social origin of its creators explain the regional localizations as well as the diversity of styles of jazz music.
