The Crisis of Young Workers Residences : a try at interpretation.
As a fairly recent institution — created, under their present shape, after world War II — «Young Workers Residences» are, in fact, a 19th century heritage. Born with industrialization in the tracks of social catholicisme, «patronages» were at that epochmeant to stabilize labour force while their ambition was to promote morale education of the woiking class. Traces of this historical vocation have never completely disapeared. Looking back into the past helps the authors to seize the meaning of the various educational projects developped over time : continuities can then appear under the evident social and economic changes. Today, Young Workers Residences are undergoing a crisis. Selection on entrance, priority given to collective over individual assistance, protection from influence, work as a fundemental value... these main characteristics no more coincide either with the needs of young workers nor with social demands.
