Alfred Herman, [Promoting Solidarity for Strikers]In support of a strike by the metalworkers of Newcastle on 8 August 1871, the GC sent to workers in Belgium a document entitled To The Belgian Federal Council. Its author, the craftsman Alfred Herman, AlfredHerman [1843–1900], was founder of the IWMA in the city of Liege, and a delegate to the Brussels Congress (1868). He immigrated to London in 1871 and became a member of the GC and Corresponding Secretary for Belgium from 1871 to 1872. He participated in the London Conference of 1871 and The Hague Congress (1872), and later joined the ‘autonomist’ IWMA. In 1885 he was among the founders of the Workers’ Party of Belgium.
