Abstract

The article presents a history of population censuses on the Polish areas in the period since the first Population Census in Poland (1789) up to the last Census 2002. In the first part of the article, the organisation and the objectives of population censuses in each of the three annexed Polish territories have been discussed. The censuses were conducted due to the church or state authorities' needs. The second part discusses the organisation and the objectives of the next population censuses in the years 1946–2002 as well as the conditions of their conducting.
