Abstract
Many people in Puerto Rico, including English teachers, have questioned why so many university students perform poorly in English after having had thirteen or fourteen years of formal instruction in English as a second language. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of sex, education of the head of the household, family monthly income, type of university attended and years spent living in the US on the relationship between attitudes toward Americans and achievement in English
