Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate marriage and the family in mainland China under the impact of the Four Modernizations programme. The emergence of "new" marriage and family patterns in mainland China under the impact of current socio-economic changes in the 1980s is discussed. "Traditional" Chinese family structure prior to the communist take-over in 1949. Changes in family structure during Mao's rule from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s. (DÜI-Sen)
