Sudan: everybody's talking about peace
In: The Middle East, Heft 170, S. 17-18
Abstract
The article demonstrates that Sudan is afflicted not only with an intractable civil war but also with a government coalition of mistrustful partners. Paradoxically, as is argued, the rivalry within the government holds out of prospects of peace. At the same time, the reader is cautioned, that Sadiq al-Mahdi, a somewhat wily and experiences political campaigner, could still come up with new proposals, which can be passed off as a concession to the south and not too great a climbdown by the north. As is suggested he might repeal any Islamic laws that are passed, and blame their introduction on the Islamic National Front led by Dr. Hassan al-Turabi. (DÜI-Asd)
