Funding the Canadian city: papers presented at a symposium co-sponsored by the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (University of Toronto)
Abstract
"Funding the Canadian City, a collection of papers on municipal taxation and finance by leading experts, emerging scholars, and policy makers in the field, sets out the financial challenges facing municipalities in Canada today and examines various practical means--some established, others prospective--of navigating these challenges. The contributors to this volume cover a range of topics, including the constitutional limitations on municipal revenue sources, the importance of linking taxes to expenditures, property (and property-related) taxes, user levies, and several emerging areas of municipal taxation: road tolls and congestion charges, taxation of the sharing economy (ride-sharing and short-term home rentals), and tax measures to address problems with housing affordability in Toronto and Vancouver."--
