The Newly Industrializing Economies of Asia: Prospects of Co-operation
In: Europe-Asia-Pacific Studies in Economy and Technology
This volume deals with the Newly Industrializing Economies (NIEs) of Asia, namely Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. Based on an international conference held in Berlin in September 1989, the book contains contributions by active economists, politicians, and government officials from Asia and Europe. In Part One, country-related issues and questions of the Asia-Pacific region are presented and discussed. In Part Two, the relations between the NIEs and other regions, especially Europe, are critically examined. Against the background of recent developments in both continents, perspectives on future cooperation are analysed and discussed. The reader will receive first hand information on the reasons for the success stories of the East Asian NIEs, how they see the challenges and opportunities in their relation with Europe and at the same time, an assessment from European and global perspectives. The book also contains a summary report on the round table discussions and basic information on trade patterns
