"Conversational interviews with 627 people, focus groups, and direct observation of the Guatemalan poor are used to determine their concept of poverty, its causes and consequences. The poor are far less likely to view poverty as a result of God's will, destiny, or personal laziness, and more as due to low wages (100 percent of respondents name this), lack of access to land (ca. 60 percent), or high prices (ca. 85 percent)"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57
