Abstract

This European Essay is based on a lecture given to the David Hume Institute in Edinburgh in 2000. Its arguments and insights go to the heart of the current British debate on our country's role in the European Union. Particularly striking is the writer's claim that the European Union, far from being the grave-digger of the nation state, is in fact its saviour. This is in the strictest sense an authentically federalist argument.
