Riga and Beyond: The Political Transformation of NATO
In: NATO Review, S. 1-6
Abstract
To fulfill its roles of collective military action and security cooperation, NATO must undergo a political transformation to face such issues as terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, illegal immigration, and energy security, issues that are globally interconnected, socio-economic, largely unsolvable by military actions alone, characterized by internal and external security implications, and contested in the realm of ideas and ethics. NATO must build global partnerships, enhance its political and socio-economic information and analysis capacities, develop its ethical awareness, and improve its state-building and peace-building capacities.
