Abstract

This article explores the conceptual, practical and sentimental obstacles which have meant that Australia has, well over 100 years after Federation, retained its monarchical ties with the United Kingdom. It traces the unsuccessful referendum attempt in 1999 to convert Australia into a republic and outlines what would need to change for Australia's frozen constitutional status to thaw.
