Abstract

Though balanced in the past, Franco-German relations have been profoundly affected by the end of the Cold War, an event that enhanced the economic dimension of power. France now suffers from serious economic stalling and Germany remains highly uncertain of itself. This has produced a double denial: France refuses to adapt to the global economy and Germany refuses to assume the international responsibilities conferred by its new power.
